The impact of the liberalisation of the telecommunications sector on the Jamaican economy, culture and communications

0 comments click here

Digicel is a privately held firm owned by Denis O‟Brien a Boston College educated, Irishman. Forbes magazine in 2010 estimated his net worth at US$4.2B placing him 254 on the Forbes rich list. In April 2001, when Digicel launched its GSM mobile service in Jamaica, the company anticipated reaching the 100,000 customer plateau by the end of its first year in operation. Instead, it hit the 100,000 mark a mere 100 days after launch. Never before in the country's history of mobile telecommunications had such tremendous growth been seen in a network, as Digicel broke record after record on its way to surpassing its major competitor as the mobile provider with the largest customer base in the island.

Digicel raised the bar where an acceptable level of network coverage was concerned. Jamaicans living in rural parishes finally had a genuine option for mobile communications. With an island-wide network of over 1,000 cellular towers spread across all 14 parishes, Digicel firmly established itself as the mobile provider with the premier network coverage across the country. The company's approach of affordable phones, a user-friendly approach and mass marketing earned Digicel a leading place in the market that it astutely defended. From its inception to this very day Digicel has helped mold and shape Jamaica in a wide variety of ways, their arrival in the island was truly a catalyst that set the telecommunications sector in motion.

Liberalisation of the telecommunications market commenced with the granting of two new carrier licences for the provision of domestic mobile voice, data, and information services. Each mobile entrant used a different technology for its mobile network. Mossel (which operates under the trade name Digicel) commenced service in April 2001 using Global System of Mobile (GSM) Communications; later that year Oceanic Digital Jamaica (now Claro) commenced operation deploying Code Division Multi Access (CDMA); while C&WJ, who had been offering mobile services in Jamaica since 1991, employed Time Division Multi Access (TDMA). CWJ subsequently switched from TDMA to GSM, similar to Digicel except that they operate on different frequencies. Competition in the provider market is always beneficial to the customer so as to ensure maximum value for their money.

FLOW
Flow offers what it calls its Triple Play services to residential consumers: digital cable TV, digital landline and broadband internet access. Flow has the highest capacity broadband network in the country with 320 Gbps capability with excess capacity of approximately 75%. Since the entry of Flow in 2005 the cost of ADSL and other broadband services have fallen in excess of 60%. This has impacted our culture as well being able to bring Jamaicans that much closer to a first world technological experience even though we are considered a third world country. Allowing information of all shapes and sizes to be readily accessible by the masses; this has help speed up the cultural imperialization of our country to better match the ideals and values of the world of large.
DIGICEL
Digicel has made a large impact on Jamaica economically through bout their corporate actions and through the Digicel Foundation's exemplary charity work. Most recently though the building of a US$65M headquarters in downtown Kingston, an area that has been blighted by urban flight. The headquarters is expected to house 1,000 employees and politicians and real estate agents are expecting that this will be a catalyst for growth and renewal in the downtown business district. This is poised to bring in a lot of new businesses and interest in the area. We can see this already with the introduction of a Domino's pizza store and increased pedestrian traffic down by the waterfront properties.

LIME
In response to Digicel entering the telecommunications market; C&WJ in 2008, embarked on a new high risk transformation strategy which included corporate re-branding and changing its name from C&WJ to LIME. Since the emergence of Digicel LIME has essentially been playing a constant game of catch up trying to hold on to what little of the market-share they still have. This has led to a fair amount of promotions and network improvements beneficial to the customers such as their 3G network upgrade and launching the Caribbean's first mobile television service. This show of technological improvement pushed Digicel to one up LIME by implementing 4G technology and upgrading their own network to better facilitate their customers growing mobile needs. Most recently LIME launched a $2.99 campaign on call rates to which Digicel countered with a flurry of call plans to give the customer the best available call rate to suit their needs. In our currently declining economy value for money is a major concern for customers no matter what company you side with.

With all that being said it seems like Digicel was one of if not the biggest catalyst for technological change in the recent history of Jamaica. This is seen from the direct impact they have made on the telecommunications industry as well as indirectly pushing the competition to step their game up and not just rest on their laurels. This primarily helps Jamaica as a whole to step forward into the technological information age and become self aware that just as they take notice of other countries they are being watched as well. As stated previously the impact can be seen in a variety of ways but more so on Jamaica's economy, culture and communications advancement.

Months Later Who Has The Upper Hand?

0 comments click here

Welcome to another random Monday blogpost, trying to keep these short and sweet going forward. So not sure if you recall but a couple months back when E3 2013 happened we did our summary of the big question going into the holiday season. Which Next -Gen console to invest in? You can see that video below:

Months later and the dust has settled and the numbers are in. *Drumroll Please* Who comes out on top in the battle for Next-Gen Supremacy after all the changes and releases?

I called this from day one. Whether they want to call me a fanboy or not I was right. The facts were all there, even if certain policies and features changed here and there over the time period of when I released this video and now. So by now if you are a heavy gamer and been following the console wars you should have a firm grasp of what has solidified Sony's victory in the battle of Next Gen gaming, but here is  a updated glimpse of why.

The Games
Sony has the potential for more exciting exclusive games than Microsoft. Granted everyone is hyping over Titanfall right now, but already PS4's release of Infamous: Second Sun has further helped sell PS4's on release. As great as Titanfall is it isnt exactly the great console seller for theh XBOX One like Halo was for the original XBOX. According to a trusted source of the market for computer and videogames (MCV); PS4 hardware sales have been boosted a full 106% since the release of inFamous: Second Son. Supply constraints may have prevented that number from being even more significant. inFamous: Second Son is the first post-launch testament to the PS4's power, offering owners a chance to see visuals unlike ever seen before on a console. Sony has gone on to release a list of over 100 games that are scheduled for release on PS4 over the next year which you can see by clicking here.

Services
Essentially Sony went the route of appealing to gamers while Microsoft tried to be a jack of all trades by trying to appeal to everyone. Sadly when you are a jack of all trades but master of none it doesn't always workout so well. Granted now both consoles require you to pay for an online gaming experience but at least with Sony you get value for your money from all the PlayStation Plus deals and free games they offer. Couple that with the upcoming testing and release of PlayStation Now which will provide access to all the previous generations of games at your fingertip and its a no brainer. Ill give Microsoft the nod as far as service integration goes simply because they have the better dashboard and motion gaming setup but I play games and so do many others. I don't really care much about a voice control system that doesn't work well enough for me to abandon the idea of just using my controller to navigate the menu.

Performance
If you saw the video I did you should know the specs between both systems are relatively the same but the PS4 has a slight edge over the XBOX ONE. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes developer Kojima has gone on record saying his game will look better on PS4. And there's been a lot of argument around games like Call of Duty: Ghosts that run natively in 1080p on PS4 vs. 720p on Xbox One. Of course, the Xbox can run games in 1080p and 60fps, but with multiple titles coming in with lower native resolution on Xbox, Microsoft's machine has been publicly perceived as less powerful. Granted the experiences and games are almost identical like on Xbox One and PS4, but people will gravitate to what seems like the better system for the money. At at a $100 lower price point and essentially better gaming specs the choice is clear.

Say Hello to Our Newest Team Member

0 comments click here
Greetings Puny Fleshbags
Let me start off by saying sorry for not putting up the blog on Monday as usual but it was a special occasion. The arrival and grand coronation of Tigger, my newly acquired tabby and my first official pet. Yaay for me; achievement unlocked! Anyways if you have been following the typical random Monday blog posts I have been doing of late about the happenings of my life you would have known ahead of time of my plan to adopt Tigger. Just gonna give a quick run through of the overall process for those who may want a kitteh or puppay of their very own.

The JSPCA exists to promote kindness to animals, prevent abuse and reduce fear, pain and suffering. The JSPCA has been working in Jamaica for more than a hundred years, to protect animals from cruelty, neglect, injury and abandonment, and to defend and promote animal rights.

They operate a shelter at 10 Winchester Road, Kingston 10, and a veterinary clinic, open to the public, which also deals with more than three hundred charity cases per week. It is equipped with a laboratory, surgical suites, isolation unit and maternity ward. In addition, we have a mobile clinic which is currently stationed on weekends in the fast-growing metropolis of Portmore.

Their mission is to promote the compassionate treatment of animals through education, advocacy, veterinary care and the placing of unwanted animals in loving homes. They strive towards the improvement of conditions at the pounds and abattoirs, as well as the racetrack and riding establishments in Jamaica. One of our major goals is to amend the 1965 Cruelty to Animals Act and the Pound Laws, increasing the fines to levels which will constitute a real deterrent, and giving the JSPCA more authority to take suitable action against those who inflict harm, pain or suffering on animals.

All strays placed in our shelter are either adopted or eventually euthanized. All reported cases of cruelty or neglect are investigated, and action is taken as quickly as possible.

The adoption process is pretty straight forward, you can come in to the JSPCA and view the animals they have from Monday to Saturday between 8 am and 3:30pm. All animals are spayed/neutered so they can't reproduce. After choosing your pet you fill out the relevant paperwork and pay the adoption fee. You will be given a date to pick up your animal after it has done surgery. When you go to the JSPCA they take you around back and you get to have a few moments to decide which animal you will be taking home as a new addition to the family. Once that important decision is done it is just a matter of preparing the home environment and waiting till your due date. Open to the Public: Monday - Thursday 8:00am to 6:00 pm; Fridays 8:00 am to 4:00 pm; Saturday 8:00am to 3:00pm. For emergency service after hours, call the main number (876) 929-0320 Fax: (876) 754-4594. Bear in mind that cats are $900, kittens $700, & dogs $3,000 & puppies $1,500. Well that's about everything you need to know; so what are you waiting for? Go out and adopt a pet who needs it today...

Here's Some Friendly Advice

0 comments click here

Hi everyone welcome to another random Monday blog post. Ill try to keep this short and sweet since my planet needs me. Friend is a term that gets thrown around  and mistakenly used in cases where acquaintance would be better suited. A real friend is far and few apart and should be cherished accordingly as they not only improve your surrounding but your overall life in general. Last  Monday I talked about changes I would be making in my life  after my near death experience. Soon you will be introduced to my newest friend Tigger, but that is for another time. I almost lost a very near and dear friend to my heart because of some oversights on my part. Word of advice people never get complacent and take real friends for granted cause you don't always get a second chance to fix your mistakes in life. One of the worst feelings to experience is regret and having to live with that as a painful reminder is that much worse.

Be sure to cherish your true friends and keep the lines of communication open so you can have a long and fruitful relationship to carry you through the years. Plus who knows you just might need a true friend to save you from a bad situation one day or vice versa.

Fuck You Oscars; Fuck You...

0 comments click here

What in the holy hell is up with Hollywood and the Oscar community? How does this man still not have a goddamn Oscar? Can someone just tell this man whose ass he has to kiss or dick he has to suck to win a freaking Oscar? Yet another year has come and gone where this brilliant actor is yet again denied of an Oscar and for what. A movie about AIDS, and a movie about slavery? Yes i'm butt-hurt and yes i'm probably more upset than I need to be but that's the whole point of me doing this rant. Don't get me wrong i'm happy that this years Oscar awards was a smorgasbord of Ethnic diversity but seriously how much longer is Leonardo suppose to endure..?

Ok maybe i'm going a bit overboard with the a movie about slavery bit but I mean its not exactly a new concept. Leo had two remarkably stellar performances in 2013 for The Great Gatsby and The Wolf of Wall Street but somehow all of this equates to nothing? Sigh sorry for this rant but i'm fed up and can only imagine what Leonardo feels but he as always is taking it like a champ and being the classy gentleman we all know and love. I'll always be a die-hard Dicaprio fan; Oscar or no Oscar.

So in closing once more, Fuck You Oscars; Fuck You Hollywood Illuminati and for those of you that missed it here is a break down of the Oscar awards:

Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons Video Game Review

0 comments click here
Final Verdict - Definitely Worth Playing

Let me just start by saying this game is definitely something unexpected and different from what one would expect from an adventure game. Its branded as an adventure game but I see it partially as a puzzle game of sorts as well. I will admit I overlooked this title last year due to lack of a PC and all the hype that came with games released in the same time frame like Ducktales, Saints Row IV, Lost Planet 3, etc. So here I am clearing out my backlog and hearing good things pop up from media and the D.I.C.E. awards coverage about this game and I remember not having reviewed it. Well I aim to rectify that right about now as we look at Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a downloadable story-driven adventure video game developed by Starbreeze Studios and published by 505 Games released on 7 August 2013 for the Xbox Live Arcade and on 3 September 2013. for Steam and PlayStation Network. The game has been since released as of January 21st for free to PSN+ users so everyone can get to experience this wonderful game. The game-play revolves around the interaction between the two brothers with each other and the world. They must overcome obstacles and solve puzzles by working together. The player controls each brother with one of the analog sticks, allowing each character to move freely and individually. There are also individual action buttons for each brother using the left and right trigger accordingly. Controlling the two brothers of the story with one analog stick each can take some getting used to, but you’ll find your rhythm as you solve puzzles as you traverse lush and visually appealing world they live in.

What’s Good:
Soundtrack: I kind of get this old school Nordic vibe to the music, that or Xena warrior princess. All in all it gives off the feel of the rustic countryside that the games visuals portray.

Graphics: The visual aspect of the game is ridiculously immersive. Granted they skimmed a bit on the character design but they hit it out of the park with the environments. Every time you stumble unto a bench  you interact with it an dare treated to a simple spectacular view of your surroundings.

Story-line: Even though the game has no subtitles or English speaking voice acting the story is conveyed wonderfully through interaction and gesticulation. Another aspect of depth to the game is that they have varying responses and interactions based on which of the brothers initiates the action.

Game Mechanics: Simple yet effective is all I can say. Never in my years of playing video games can I recall something of this nature. It gives a refreshing look at video games and the possibilities that have yet to be explored for future titles.

What’s Bad:
Replay value: The game I feel lacks in replay value since the path and pace of the game and puzzles center around the brothers and their interactivity.

What Should Have Been Added:
I feel the game may have benefited from a few additional characters or multiple family members that you could choose from. That way puzzles would have variable solutions and potential for added synergy and depth as well as variation in game progression and story telling.

Final Thoughts:
The game is short but immensely satisfying. It is truly one cinematic, story-driven experience that will not disappoint you and is worth both our time and money if you have to buy it. I applaud the developers  in their attempts at stepping outside the typical comfort zone of games in this day and age. Granted not everyone was a fan but I feel the unique controller design and implementation is definitely a feather in the hat and complements the game nicely.

Do You Even Care That Its Black History Month?

2 comments click here

Well we are back again for yet another Monday random blog. Today I was gonna write about Valentines Day since its this week but I kinda did that last year and my views are pretty much the same on that so figured would tackle something new. For our Valentines Day post feel free to click this link if you are a new viewer or haven't seen it already. Black History Month, also known as African-American History Month in America, is an annual observance in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated annually in the United States and Canada in February and the United Kingdom in October. Even though its primarily celebrated in these countries Black People celebrate and recognize the month of February all across the world. Granted I don't live in the aforementioned countries but I can't help but wonder; do you even care that its black history month?

The weeks leading into Black History month were rife with controversy from the circulation of the above picture. Now I can't imagine this being a good idea but i'm sure the person that did this knew this would happen and spur publicity for the party. Its no stretch of the imagine to figure that historic black figures would be disappointed with how we as a people have grown over time. Popular satirical cartoon series The Boondocks made mention of a similar situation and the overall development of our people and all they fought for. Seems only right I let y'all watch that...

After watching that do you think that is an accurate justification of our current societal views on ourselves as a people? I'm not really sure what I as an individual can do or say to appeal to my fellow black people but as a nerd and denizen of the Internet I figure this small gesture might be of some consequence to someone. Here is a link to download the recently highly anticipated movie "12 Years A Slave". Watch it and comment your thoughts on the movie or Black History month or both. Every year Black History Month sparks an annual debate about the continued usefulness and fairness of a designated month dedicated to the history of one race. Many people hold concerns about black history being delegated to a single month and the "hero worship" of some of the historical figures often recognized. Do you think we deserve a month? Is that enough? One person suggested we should be exempted from paying all taxes; personally I like that last idea a lot.

Time To Celebrate The Music Industry Again

0 comments click here

Well its that time of year again where we showcase and highlight all the epic music that got us through another year. The 2014 Grammy Awards took place at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles last night. The star-studded event featured performances from the world's most talented artists. Here is the rundown of the category nominees and winners... CLICK ME!!

Now that we have that out of the way lets get to the real reason people watch the Grammy's; the live performances. For your viewing pleasure and ease of access here are all the performances from the 56th Grammy Awards show starting with the leading lady of the industry Beyonce and rounding it out with the song of the year from the legendary Daft Punk.

Beyoncé & Jay Z performing "Drunk In Love"

Lorde performing "Royals"

Katy Perry & Juicy J performing "Dark Horse"

Chicago & Robin Thicke perform a medley including "Blurred Lines"

John Legend performing "All Of Me"

Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons performing a mashup of "Radioactive" and "M.A.A.D. City"

Ringo Starr solo performance

Pink! and Nate Reuss performing "Just Give Me A Reason"

Ringo Starr & Paul McCartney perform together

Taylor Swift performing "All Too Well"

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Performing "Same Love" with Mary Lambert and Madonna

Daft Punk, Pharrell, & Stevie Wonder perform "Get Lucky"

Oh and before I forget shout-outs to LL Cool J who hosted the show for the third consecutive time on Sunday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Oddly enough apparently countries that have anti gay laws in place such as Nigeria, Russia and Jamaica had forced intermission during the Mackelmore "Same Love" song due to fear of showing gay marriage in their respective countries; go figure. All in all it was a decent showing for the industry but the question remaining on everyone's mind is; "What the hell was Pharrell thinking wearing that hat to the Grammy's?" He my dude and all being a trendsetter but the internet blew up wondering what was up with the hat; what do you think?
