Retrospect on the movers and shakers in eSports in Jamaica

2014 has been an exciting year for Jamaica for gaming and the industries that surround it. The gaming communities have strived to bring competitive gaming to the forefront for years but has not really made any significant progress until now. I would like to take the time to look at the key players that have made a big difference in the gaming scene here in Jamaica. Here is my top 5 movers and shakers for eSports in Jamaica.

5. Dean Barnnett
If you play FIFA competitively in Jamaica then you will know who Dean is. Founder of the Silverbirds Steel Pan Band, Dean is also the Captain and Manager of Empire Arcadia’s FIFA video game team. Dean hosts monthly FIFA tournaments at the Silver Birds manor located at 21 WestLake Richmond Park.

Dean’s multi-talent in management between his band and eSports division has earned him respect throughout the gaming community and peers in business alike. His band is renown throughout Jamaica as well as his FIFA Division which not only won the International Caribbean Championship for FIFA in St. Maarten in 2013 but has also won the Digicel DigiCup FIFA eSports Championship in Jamaica over the summer.

Dean continues to host his monthly FIFA Tournament which you can find more information about here:

One of Jamaica’s premiere retailers for video games is Str8Games; owned by Gregory Moore. Gregory has worked with countless companies in Jamaica to host a number of video game oriented events. From providing video game equipment to structuring the event itself, you name it and Gregory has played a part in it.

Str8Games is currently in the planning phases to set up a local tournament series in Sovereign Mall in Kingston Jamaica. With his experience in direct business sales via retail and business development Gregory is one of the key players in the development of eSports in Jamaica and is the one to watch out for.

You can find out more about Gregory and Str8Games at the stores Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/str8games or follow him on twitter at @str8gamesja

3. Wayne Benjamin
It’s a shame that a lot of people in Jamaica have no idea who “Wayne Benjamin” is. The fact of the matter is, Wayne is single handily responsible for Jamaica’s sole gaming channel “The Lab Video Game TV”. Aired on FLOW Channel 100, the Lab Video Game TV show case some of the newest video games out to date along with what is going on in the video game industry.

This is a huge contribution to gaming in Jamaica on so many levels. Of late Wayne has been focusing his attention on eSports in Jamaica by lending his resources and multi-year talents in filming to help develop eSports in Jamaica from the media end.

Wayne recently launched season 6 of The Lab Video Game TV series which focuses on the core development strategies for laying down the foundation of eSports in Jamaica. You can view the episode here: http://youtu.be/H17D579S_90 for more information and video content on the Lab Video Game TV you can check out their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/TheLabVideoGameTV?fref=ts  or follow on twitter at: @TheLabGameTV

2. Andrew Johnson
Andrew is no stranger to competitive gaming in Jamaica. Not only is he a competitor he is also Jamaica’s premiere tournament director. Andrew manages one of Jamaica’s largest online social communities for gaming via Fighter’s Allegiance Jamaica on Facebook.

Andrew’s passion to see Jamaica move forward in eSports is shown through his hard work and dedication as he self-funded the National Jamaican eSports Tournament “Mash Di Button” which he founded. Andrew is one of the core components in making eSports work in Jamaica as he was instrumental for bringing international support for eSports to Jamaica to help lay down its foundation.

Andrew is now working behind the scene with key eSports enthusiast of like minds to ensure that competitive gaming will be a huge industry in Jamaica. 1. TriForce Johnson
A Jamaican Native comes home to master mind a plan to put his home country on the map in the eSports world. Triforce has created a network with members in the Jamaican gaming community and major companies both in Jamaica and the United States.

TriForce spent one year working behind the scene with Digicel while in the United States to set up the country’s Virtual World Cup tournament which has now created a rippling effect that has gained the attention of other major businesses in Jamaica to help spearhead eSports in Jamaica.

Continuing his work abroad, TriForce is slowly giving Jamaica international exposure in eSports to officially welcome the country to the industry. When at the Digicel FIFA Championships, TriForce dedicated his team Empire Arcadia’s; World Record for the most documented Tournament wins for a gaming team to the country of Jamaica in respect to his late mother who was buried in Jamaica in 2012.
For more information on TriForce you can visit his Facebook Page at: https://www.facebook.com/EMP.TriForce.GameMaster or follow him on Twitter at: @EMP_TriForce_GM

Cosplaying Like A Bawse!!!

0 comments click here

Freaks, weirdos, geeks, nerds, otakus, weeaboos all these different labels and names that people find for us but none capture fully the true essence of what we are. Passionate! About a culture so refined and foreign to us that damn near everything about it pulls you in. The time honored history, values and culture that is passed on through not only the people but also the media that manages to leave its country and make its way overseas for us to partake in. It has been 50 long and noteworthy years since Jamaica first partnered with Japan as countries in arms and I am proud to see such an out pouring of support from so many for events such as Anime Nation. This will now be the 5th year since this event took Jamaica by storm and oddly it shows no signs of slowing down. Every year more and more people show up and every year the lovely people at JA Cosplayaz have to find a bigger and better venue to house all the passionate anime/manga lovers out there.

JaCosplayaz is primarily spearheaded by the above 3 individuals; from left  to right: Tetrice Afayah Prendergast, Zane Francis, & Fabian Pinkney. AS you can see clearly they have a strong passion for the culture and all it offers whether through gaming or animation. It was this passion that has led them into a long standing partnership with the Embassy Of Japan that has helped bring awareness of Japan in Jamaica to higher heights every year. From the various cultural exchange programs such as JET (The Japan Exchange And Teaching Programme) to more local based events such as Anime Nation, Japanese presence and impact is at an all time high in Jamaica. Just want to take this time to say kudos to the aforementioned people and all the countless hours and sacrifices they made to make this recurring event the success it is today. Also want to give a very honorable mention to the three main admins of the JACosplayaz Facebook page Tara Sham, Sherae Morrison & Stephen Brown.

Stephen & Sherae Spent The Night Terrifying Patron Young And Old
The event started off well and granted some items ran overtime somehow managed to progress smoothly into the night. The day started off with a one of a kind interview segment with one of Japans animators of legend Masami Suda. One of the main driving forces behind such classics as Gatchaman aka G-Force and Fist of the North Star. Not to mention all the cultural displays and merchandise on sale; and if that wasn't enough there was a wide variety of live performances on display for the patrons from musical to animated. Hell there was even a video game tournament played for Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3. The night culminated into an epic costume parade to showcase some of the cosplayers in attendance. Local cosplayer extraordinaire Steffi Singh made a clean sweep of Anime Nation 2014 by winning not only the award for cosplayer of the year but also best costume of the event. Kudos to you Steffi you made a lot of people proud, really wanted to get one of your water paintings but my outfit broke my piggy bank so sucks to be me.
Steffi Singh
All in all great event, great turnout and great people. I am very happy with my first experience cosplaying even though I was pretty nervous about my outfit and being around so many people. The highlights of my night would be all the lil kids I took pictures with, seeing all the Japanese people instantly recognize my cosplay and wanting to take pics and getting to snap a picture with a fellow Dragonball Z cosplayer who was cosplaying as Gohan. Can't wait for next years event to roll around definitely going to cosplay a character that isn't short so I don't have to crouch for all my pics to stay in character, its been two days and my legs are still jello and ache. Sorry to those that would have preferred to see video coverage footage but my camera has issues and dies super fast if I record video so I focused mainly on taking pictures so feel free to look through the 200+ pictures I managed to get and remember to like our Facebook page. This is your friendly neighborhood gamer Zalgo Cometh signing off...

Question Time With The Emperor

0 comments click here
Welcome to another Monday blog installment. Thanks for sticking with me in this transitional period of me not having any idea about what I want to write. So I have been ridiculously busy working in real life both at my day job as a VoIP engineer and my side job as a gamer aficionado to the world at large. For about a year now I have been trying to set plans in motion to embark on a journey to bring eSports to Jamaica on a corporate level. Months later and here we are with the world ambassador and advocate of competitive gaming Isaiah 'Triforce' Johnson as Digicel Jamaica becomes the first corporation to embrace the world of competitive gaming. I sat down for a quick Q & A with the man himself so others can get an understanding of who he is and what he brings to the table.

1. What is your full name and how did you get the name Triforce?
My full name is Isaiah TriForce Johnson. I added TriForce to my first name because a lot of my friends know me for being a huge Zelda fan. At first my friends just wanted to call me Zelda but I told them that is the Princess of the game and they did not agree with calling me Link. I’m not a bag guy so Ganon didn’t fit. Originally they did not like calling me GameMaster because in the arcades I use to put up TGM. It was my friend Robert Billings who then suggested TriForce and I agreed with it and the name stuck. I was able to still use TGM in arcades and if it allowed 4 letters I would put TFGM. It wasn’t until around 2002 I started putting EMP as my tag instead but that is because I wanted to pay tribute to my gaming team that I formed.

2. Has your family always been supportive of your gaming and vision for the future?

Not my Mother so much but my Father does support and encourage me a lot to pursue my passions in gaming. In fact it was my very own Father that started it up for me as a gamer. He himself use to play Pac-man in the cab station that he use to take me to when he was working and getting ready to take me home from school.

3. Why do so many people feel the need to judge you as a bad person in the FGC?
I’m not from the Fighting Game Community and my outlook on a lot of things gaming never meshed with their sub-culture. I could go into a long drawn out story about it but to be honest, I’m at a point where it doesn’t even matter anymore. I have supporters and non-supportive people in the FGC and I’m fine with that. 50/50 is not bad and you can’t please everyone so that as good as it will get for me. What matters is that my fellow Nintendo gamers support my love for Nintendo and we share that common goal and bond. N4L

4. List 5 of your favorite or most respected non-EMP FGC members (Players/Organisers)?
Jason Cole - @AfroCole
Seth Killian - @sethkillian
LI Joe - @thisislijoe
Mr. Qurate - @MrQuaRate
Mike Ross -  @ThatMikeRossGuy

5. Why?
They all keep it real and hustle their passions hard.

6. Why did you decide to call your organization Empire Arcadia?
Arcades is where it really started for me. Yeah I played some game & watch, some table tops etc. however the whole culture behind it hit me at 4 for the arcade. All I saw was just people putting quarters in arcade machines and playing. I had to stand on crates to watch and I was memorized. As I got older I considered people who hung out at the arcades, “Arcadians”. Like American’s are to America. When I decided to give an official legal name to my community now turned organization, my goal was to create an Empire from born from the era of the Arcades. “Empire Arcadia”.

7. What exactly is Empire Arcadia and its function?
Empire Arcadia is a development organization that utilizes the talents, passions and innovations of its gamers to help further develop new and old elements in gaming such as, Fashion, Art, Music, Media, Education, Health, Competition, Technology, Entertainment etc. in Gaming. We just so happen to use our gaming team as the marketing team since winning draws attention.

8. What job would you have liked to pursue and why if you had not started Empire Arcadia?
Regardless that I created Empire Arcadia, I’m still going after that Community Manager and or Ambassador position for Nintendo. No if and or buts about it.

9. How has your overall experience in Jamaica been?
It’s spiritually invigorating to be home.

10. Any final words to the various gamers in Jamaica but also the world as per the future of competitive gaming and what it holds for the masses?
Everyone on the planet plays games and it is my obligatory duty to open as many gaming platforms, in as many countries in as many cities, in as many communities as I can in the world. Bless up Jamaica.

PAX East 2014 Roundup

0 comments click here

PAX 2014 happened this past weekend and it was truly the critically acclaimed event that we all know and love. The Penny Arcade eXpo (PAX) is a series of gaming festivals held in Seattle, Boston, and Melbourne. PAX was created by Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, the authors of the Penny Arcade webcomic, because they wanted to attend a show that gave equal attention to console gamers, computer gamers, and tabletop gamers. Created in 2004, PAX has been hailed as celebration of gamer culture. Defining characteristics of the festival include an opening keynote speech from an industry insider, game-culture inspired concerts, panels on game topics, exhibitor booths from independent and major game developers and publishers, a LAN party, tabletop game tournaments, and video game freeplay areas. This years PAX was filled with a wide variety of MOBA, Mobile, and MMO related games:

You will be missed Harold Allen Ramis.

Harold Allen Ramis (November 21, 1944 – February 24, 2014) was an American actor, director, and writer specializing in comedy. Harold got his start in comedy as Playboy magazine's joke editor and reviewer. His best-known film acting roles are as Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters. Ramis's films have influenced subsequent generations of comedians and comedy writers. Filmmakers Jay Roach, Jake Kasdan, Adam Sandler, and Peter and Bobby Farrelly have cited his films as amongst their favorites. Ramis was married twice and had three children. In May 2010, Ramis contracted an infection that resulted in complications from autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis. He lost the ability to walk, but after relearning to do so, he suffered a relapse of the disease in late 2011. On February 24, 2014, Ramis died at his Chicago home from complications arising from vasculitis. He was 69 years old.

Time To Celebrate The Music Industry Again

0 comments click here

Well its that time of year again where we showcase and highlight all the epic music that got us through another year. The 2014 Grammy Awards took place at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles last night. The star-studded event featured performances from the world's most talented artists. Here is the rundown of the category nominees and winners... CLICK ME!!

Now that we have that out of the way lets get to the real reason people watch the Grammy's; the live performances. For your viewing pleasure and ease of access here are all the performances from the 56th Grammy Awards show starting with the leading lady of the industry Beyonce and rounding it out with the song of the year from the legendary Daft Punk.

Beyoncé & Jay Z performing "Drunk In Love"

Lorde performing "Royals"

Katy Perry & Juicy J performing "Dark Horse"

Chicago & Robin Thicke perform a medley including "Blurred Lines"

John Legend performing "All Of Me"

Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons performing a mashup of "Radioactive" and "M.A.A.D. City"

Ringo Starr solo performance

Pink! and Nate Reuss performing "Just Give Me A Reason"

Ringo Starr & Paul McCartney perform together

Taylor Swift performing "All Too Well"

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Performing "Same Love" with Mary Lambert and Madonna

Daft Punk, Pharrell, & Stevie Wonder perform "Get Lucky"

Oh and before I forget shout-outs to LL Cool J who hosted the show for the third consecutive time on Sunday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Oddly enough apparently countries that have anti gay laws in place such as Nigeria, Russia and Jamaica had forced intermission during the Mackelmore "Same Love" song due to fear of showing gay marriage in their respective countries; go figure. All in all it was a decent showing for the industry but the question remaining on everyone's mind is; "What the hell was Pharrell thinking wearing that hat to the Grammy's?" He my dude and all being a trendsetter but the internet blew up wondering what was up with the hat; what do you think?

The Simple Truth

1 comments click here

Now that I have your attention, welcome to another Monday blog for the month of April. Since i'm trying to somewhat practice for an upcoming tournament at the end of April Monday blogs might take a bit of a nose dive in quantity as my time is very limited between work and blog stuff. Just thought I would post this video as it pretty much sums up the bare and simple truth of the most effective way to be faithful in a relationship. Granted this video is for men it can just as easily be tweaked towards the ladies as well so please do give a watch and leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

Its The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

4 comments click here

Wow, didn't know you guys cared so deeply. I know you are happy it's Monday and you get a random topic blog post but try to show some composure people. So here we are gathered here today to share thoughts and opinions yet again. If you hadn't figured it out from the title of today's post we are going to be talking about Christmas today. Young or old for some reason or another Christmas is a time of year that appeals to so many people for so many different reasons. It really is the most wonderful time of the year...

So whether you are religious or not everyone has a reason typically to  look forward to the Christmas season. If you don't like this time of year you are considered a Grinch; i'll address that issue later on. So for some its remembering and celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for others its a holiday from work or school and even for some it means money for their business and their family. I think regardless of your reasoning or belief system at its core Christmas is a time for togetherness whether it be family, friends, or total stranger. You know the usual cliche goodwill towards all mankind and what not; because at the end of the day all we really need for a great Christmas is each other and that bond of humanity we share.

As far as i'm concerned I have been through all the applicable stage of Christmas joy and glad I got to:

  • Childhood - belief in Santa Clause and that the sole purpose of Christmas is to be rewarded for being nice and a good child all year. On a side note if you have kids or interact with kids don't rob them of this joy or the ability to connect with and socialize with other children by telling them there is no such thing as Santa Claus. Well unless you are religious; you guys are the exception cause you need to instill those values in your child from a young age for your respective religion whether it be for Christmas, Kwanzaa or Hanukkah.
  • Adolescence - where I figured out it was my parents who were doing the gift buying all along and Christmas was just another holiday season break I got from having to go to school. This is also when you start appreciating such things as grand market night out on the town for Christmas eve. Being out with friends for fun times and lots of laughs feeling like you are an adult staying out late and what not. You still however try to hold on to a bit of that childhood behavior still expecting gifts from your parents even thou you claim your an adult and not a baby anymore.
  • Adulthood - Christmas now serves one of two purposes, getting to spend time with your family who you no longer see regularly because you are out in the world trying to make a living or additional expenses for having to buy gifts for people in your life. The latter can be a good or bad ting depending on your personality as you might have wanted to do it but didn't have the finances to be fore or it might be that you feel pressured into having to do it because you don't want to seem like an asshole. I thankfully fall into the good side of things and feel so much better about myself knowing I have a job that can afford me to buy gifts for the ones I care about the most.
  • Parenthood - the cycle has come full circle and now you gt to see your child through the very same stages you were blessed enough to experience. Ensure your children experience and cherish them as you did if not more so that the cycle can continue on for generations to come.

Now to address those so called Grinch's of Christmas who cant seem to just enjoy the season and wish cheer and goodwill to their fellowman. To put it simply you guys suck. I don't know who or at what potential stage in your life someone pissed in your cereal to make you hate Christmas; but you got some serious issues. If on the most festive happiest time of the year you can't find it in your heart to be a better person and in turn make the world a better place. So with that being said all I can say to you is...

Cherish the Moments...

9 comments click here

Yes my friends its another Monday that finds us here alive and well for the most part, as we inch that much closer to the end of the world on December 21st. Life is a fickle thing, one moment all is well, you are enjoying life to the fullest and the next it sneaks up and bitch slaps you in the face. What is the meaning of life is a question that many people ask themselves sometimes going even further to wonder why its so hard for them and contemplate suicide. Today i'm gonna break down the stages of life everyone goes through so you can better prepare your mind/heart in those tough times of self doubt. Its going to be ok, the positivism of these singular moments far outweigh the negativity of the many bad moments. So just endure the waves of bullshit that come your way and strive for your special times. I like to call these 'Life Moments'; they are the important times to acknowledge on the journey of life till death.

'Life Moments'

Your first crush:
This can happen really early in life or a bit later on but it is an important moment of life as it is your first encounter with that inexplicable feeling call love. Now don't get me twisted i'm not referring to that idol love for your favorite actor or singer or such; I mean an actual person you have access to in your day to day life. Some get hit harder than others that first time around but its definitely one of those things that shape your life for the future. 9/10 if you ask someone they can tell you who their first crush was.

Puberty:
As Charles Dickens so eloquently said in his book 'A Tale Of Two Cities'; "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,". This portion of your life is actually something to be happy about because it is like a rite of passage to usher you into a new age of existence and a new standing in society as a whole. Essentially like a caterpillar entering a cocoon to begin its metamorphosis into a butterfly. Even more so when you reach it before some of your peers and you notice certain things that you never used to before. Don't even get me started on the random hair growth; yikes.

Graduation:
No matter if its primary, secondary, or tertiary, graduating holds a sense of joy and fulfillment that you will take with you through the years. They hold both happy and sad attachments because not only do you achieve your primary objective but you also have to move on and leave all the memories and moments you have made. Yes you move on-wards to new experiences and possibilities but you also essentially start the process all over again of establishing an identity and persona in your next environment.

Losing your virginity:
This holds more significance to women because along side entering puberty this is another definitive moment for them. For men its just another rite of passage into manhood but regardless of the differences between the two viewpoints no one ever forgets their first; for better or for worst. This can be a traumatizing or enjoyable experience that shapes your perception of the opposite sex, your general sexuality as well as your open mindedness towards sex in general. This moment helps determine if you will be ok with what you are about to see our not.

Your first job/paycheck after moving out on your own:
This will be a crowning achievement for you solidifying the fact that you are your own individual off in the world making your own way. This validation is even more important if it was that you went all the way through school and attained a tertiary education as per your parents wishes and made them proud. Sadly that bitch slap I mentioned from life earlier has a way of sneaking up on you when you see how much of that pay check goes to taxes and your living expenses. Welcome to being an adult where you realize the government is your greatest enemy and friend...

Marriage:
Once again this one is a big one for the ladies. Funny how everything is such a big deal for them as individuals go figure. I guess life really does revolve around women after-all  Females solidify their role as mother, wife, lover when this day comes. Most if not all females have if not fully at least partially planned this day from they were younger and most times its referred to as her day even though its her and the man that's getting married. Regardless it is a monumental occurrence that on the path that ones life will take.

Having children:
The is probably the most important aspect in the latter years of your life. It leaves a carbon stamp on the earth and space and time itself as you ensure your linage is carried on and your existence is not erased or forgotten over time. They are your legacy and essentially mark the continuance of the circle of life that started when you were born for your parents and so on and so forth. They begin their existence in this world and go through the same 'Life Moments' you did. With each generation, you as a parent aim to provide them with a better existence than you had through your wisdom, experience and provision.

Well I think that sums it up as far as i'm concerned. I know I might have missed some 'Life Moments' so to speak but I want to have a conversation with y'all so feel free to comment with what you might consider a 'Life Moment' we all have that I might have missed. Cause at the end of the day people still wonder what is the meaning of life and all it has to offer; they ask why are we here. Well today is your lucky day; since the world is going to end in a couple weeks anyways I might as well spill the answer...
