The Hits Keep Coming: DOTA 2 Takes Center Stage

0 comments click here

Well things are certainly growing fast in the gaming scene for Jamaica. This week we introduce you to a young man who seeks to be the driving force behind the Dota 2 Community here in Jamaica. Even though the scene is still in its infancy, the group is passionate and enthusiastic about their game and seek to grow their community accordingly. Say hello to Prince Royal...

1. Politely Introduce yourself (Name, Game and community)

A. Hey I am Prince Royal and I'm a Dota 2 Enthusiast and Pro-Gamer. I currently lead the Dota 2 Jamaica community that hosts Dota 2 tournaments locally and within the Caribbean region.

2. How long have you been playing Dota2 casually and competitively?

A. I've been playing Dota since 2012 when my friends at UWI introduced it to me. I started playing Dota 2  late 2013/ early 2014 causally and then competitively later on in 2014.

3. Where do you want to see Dota2 in Jamaica go? Also what are you doing to help get it there?

A. I want to see Jamaican teams represented in the the official Dota 2 international competitions. What we're doing for Dota 2 in Jamaica is currently forming unions and recognizing local talents in Dota 2 through tournament hosting. We're doing this in conjuction with Tandem, Cyberbox LAN Center and Triforce & Co. with JA G.A.M.E.S. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/JamaicaGames/)

4. In comparison to the world where on the competitive scale do you think the Dota2 players in Jamaica are?

A. In comparison to the world on a competitive scale, Dota 2 players in Jamaica rivals among top players in the game. If you don't believe me be sure to check out "FIRST BLOOD"  a live Dota 2 tournament to be held in Kingston, Jamaica in March 2015.

5. Has there been an official Dota2 tournament in Jamaica yet? If not do you plan to host any and where if you do?

A. There has never been a Dota 2 tournament in Jamaica to date (not that I know of to say the least). But as I said earlier we are planning a major live Dota 2 tournament in Jamaica to be held at Cyberbox Lan Center for more details you can check out our Facebook page and join our community group "Dota 2 Jamaica" (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1530182720569138/).

6. How can we contact you (twitter and facebook) and where can we find your community here in Jamaica?

A. We currently don't have a physical location at the moment but we are looking at venues such as Cyberbox Lan Center and other potential venues that would be able to accommodate a healthy turn out for a Dota2 tournament. You may contact us directly through the Dota 2 Jamaica Facebook community page if you have any questions. I hope to see you at our tournaments in the near future! Retrospect on the movers and shakers in eSports in Jamaica

2014 has been an exciting year for Jamaica for gaming and the industries that surround it. The gaming communities have strived to bring competitive gaming to the forefront for years but has not really made any significant progress until now. I would like to take the time to look at the key players that have made a big difference in the gaming scene here in Jamaica. Here is my top 5 movers and shakers for eSports in Jamaica.

5. Dean Barnnett

Dean’s multi-talent in management between his band and eSports division has earned him respect throughout the gaming community and peers in business alike. His band is renown throughout Jamaica as well as his FIFA Division which not only won the International Caribbean Championship for FIFA in St. Maarten in 2013 but has also won the Digicel DigiCup FIFA eSports Championship in Jamaica over the summer.

Aired on FLOW Channel 100, the Lab Video Game TV show case some of the newest video games out to date along with what is going on in the video game industry.

This is a huge contribution to gaming in Jamaica on so many levels. Of late Wayne has been focusing his attention on eSports in Jamaica by lending his resources and multi-year talents in filming to help develop eSports in Jamaica from the media end.

Wayne recently launched season 6 of The Lab Video Game TV series which focuses on the core development strategies for laying down the foundation of eSports in Jamaica. Andrew is one of the core components in making eSports work in Jamaica as he was instrumental for bringing international support for eSports to Jamaica to help lay down its foundation.

Andrew is now working behind the scene with key eSports enthusiast of like minds to ensure that competitive gaming will be a huge industry in Jamaica. 1. TriForce Johnson
A Jamaican Native comes home to master mind a plan to put his home country on the map in the eSports world. Triforce has created a network with members in the Jamaican gaming community and major companies both in Jamaica and the United States.

TriForce spent one year working behind the scene with Digicel while in the United States to set up the country’s Virtual World Cup tournament which has now created a rippling effect that has gained the attention of other major businesses in Jamaica to help spearhead eSports in Jamaica.

Continuing his work abroad, TriForce is slowly giving Jamaica international exposure in eSports to officially welcome the country to the industry. When at the Digicel FIFA Championships, TriForce dedicated his team Empire Arcadia’s; World Record for the most documented Tournament wins for a gaming team to the country of Jamaica in respect to his late mother who was buried in Jamaica in 2012.

Cosplaying Like A Bawse!!!

0 comments click here

Freaks, weirdos, geeks, nerds, otakus, weeaboos all these different labels and names that people find for us but none capture fully the true essence of what we are. Passionate! About a culture so refined and foreign to us that damn near everything about it pulls you in. The time honored history, values and culture that is passed on through not only the people but also the media that manages to leave its country and make its way overseas for us to partake in. It has been 50 long and noteworthy years since Jamaica first partnered with Japan as countries in arms and I am proud to see such an out pouring of support from so many for events such as Anime Nation. This will now be the 5th year since this event took Jamaica by storm and oddly it shows no signs of slowing down. Every year more and more people show up and every year the lovely people at JA Cosplayaz have to find a bigger and better venue to house all the passionate anime/manga lovers out there.

JaCosplayaz is primarily spearheaded by the above 3 individuals; from left  to right: Tetrice Afayah Prendergast, Zane Francis, & Fabian Pinkney. AS you can see clearly they have a strong passion for the culture and all it offers whether through gaming or animation. It was this passion that has led them into a long standing partnership with the Embassy Of Japan that has helped bring awareness of Japan in Jamaica to higher heights every year. From the various cultural exchange programs such as JET (The Japan Exchange And Teaching Programme) to more local based events such as Anime Nation, Japanese presence and impact is at an all time high in Jamaica. Just want to take this time to say kudos to the aforementioned people and all the countless hours and sacrifices they made to make this recurring event the success it is today. Also want to give a very honorable mention to the three main admins of the JACosplayaz Facebook page Tara Sham, Sherae Morrison & Stephen Brown.

Stephen & Sherae Spent The Night Terrifying Patron Young And Old
The event started off well and granted some items ran overtime somehow managed to progress smoothly into the night. The day started off with a one of a kind interview segment with one of Japans animators of legend Masami Suda. One of the main driving forces behind such classics as Gatchaman aka G-Force and Fist of the North Star. Not to mention all the cultural displays and merchandise on sale; and if that wasn't enough there was a wide variety of live performances on display for the patrons from musical to animated. Hell there was even a video game tournament played for Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3. The night culminated into an epic costume parade to showcase some of the cosplayers in attendance. Local cosplayer extraordinaire Steffi Singh made a clean sweep of Anime Nation 2014 by winning not only the award for cosplayer of the year but also best costume of the event. Kudos to you Steffi you made a lot of people proud, really wanted to get one of your water paintings but my outfit broke my piggy bank so sucks to be me.
Steffi Singh
All in all great event, great turnout and great people. I am very happy with my first experience cosplaying even though I was pretty nervous about my outfit and being around so many people. The highlights of my night would be all the lil kids I took pictures with, seeing all the Japanese people instantly recognize my cosplay and wanting to take pics and getting to snap a picture with a fellow Dragonball Z cosplayer who was cosplaying as Gohan. Can't wait for next years event to roll around definitely going to cosplay a character that isn't short so I don't have to crouch for all my pics to stay in character, its been two days and my legs are still jello and ache. Sorry to those that would have preferred to see video coverage footage but my camera has issues and dies super fast if I record video so I focused mainly on taking pictures so feel free to look through the 200+ pictures I managed to get and remember to like our Facebook page. This is your friendly neighborhood gamer Zalgo Cometh signing off...

Say Hello to Our Newest Team Member

0 comments click here
Greetings Puny Fleshbags
Let me start off by saying sorry for not putting up the blog on Monday as usual but it was a special occasion. The arrival and grand coronation of Tigger, my newly acquired tabby and my first official pet. Yaay for me; achievement unlocked! Anyways if you have been following the typical random Monday blog posts I have been doing of late about the happenings of my life you would have known ahead of time of my plan to adopt Tigger. Just gonna give a quick run through of the overall process for those who may want a kitteh or puppay of their very own.

The JSPCA exists to promote kindness to animals, prevent abuse and reduce fear, pain and suffering. The JSPCA has been working in Jamaica for more than a hundred years, to protect animals from cruelty, neglect, injury and abandonment, and to defend and promote animal rights.

They operate a shelter at 10 Winchester Road, Kingston 10, and a veterinary clinic, open to the public, which also deals with more than three hundred charity cases per week. It is equipped with a laboratory, surgical suites, isolation unit and maternity ward. In addition, we have a mobile clinic which is currently stationed on weekends in the fast-growing metropolis of Portmore.

Their mission is to promote the compassionate treatment of animals through education, advocacy, veterinary care and the placing of unwanted animals in loving homes. They strive towards the improvement of conditions at the pounds and abattoirs, as well as the racetrack and riding establishments in Jamaica. One of our major goals is to amend the 1965 Cruelty to Animals Act and the Pound Laws, increasing the fines to levels which will constitute a real deterrent, and giving the JSPCA more authority to take suitable action against those who inflict harm, pain or suffering on animals.

All strays placed in our shelter are either adopted or eventually euthanized. All reported cases of cruelty or neglect are investigated, and action is taken as quickly as possible.

The adoption process is pretty straight forward, you can come in to the JSPCA and view the animals they have from Monday to Saturday between 8 am and 3:30pm. All animals are spayed/neutered so they can't reproduce. After choosing your pet you fill out the relevant paperwork and pay the adoption fee. You will be given a date to pick up your animal after it has done surgery. When you go to the JSPCA they take you around back and you get to have a few moments to decide which animal you will be taking home as a new addition to the family. Once that important decision is done it is just a matter of preparing the home environment and waiting till your due date. Open to the Public: Monday - Thursday 8:00am to 6:00 pm; Fridays 8:00 am to 4:00 pm; Saturday 8:00am to 3:00pm. For emergency service after hours, call the main number (876) 929-0320 Fax: (876) 754-4594. Bear in mind that cats are $900, kittens $700, & dogs $3,000 & puppies $1,500. Well that's about everything you need to know; so what are you waiting for? Go out and adopt a pet who needs it today...

The Answer Lies In The Heart Of Battle

1 comments click here

Welcome to another random Monday blog here on In The Mind Of My Mind. Your friendly neighborhood gamer Zalgo_Cometh here with some interesting news for one and all. The FGC (Fighting Game Community) of Jamaica is holding the islands biggest gathering of epic proportions. Anyone can be a member of the FGC from the young to the old so its no surprise to see both young and old at events like these. Our little island of Jamaica has been home to some pretty epic events so it seemed only natural to add an event of this caliber to our roster. So I sat down with the Fighters Allegiance Of Jamaica for an interview to help educate the masses on who they are and what they are trying to accomplish. So without further ado...

Tournament Play, though it has been around for a while, has only recently reached the mainstream spotlight. For some titles, such as Starcraft, the rise to prominence is truly remarkable. The rise of Major League Gaming has made strides to legitimize video games as a sport, and it's not uncommon to see game tournaments awarding cash prizes in the upwards of tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. However, this rise in popularity has not gone evenly across the board. Completely distinct from MLG or "E-Sports" is the Fighting Game Community—a niche which is slowly but surely becoming more "mainstream", changing the video game community quite a bit. It is now time for Jamaica to stand up and be counted with the world in yet another battle of skill and prestige. As a famous man once said "The answer lies, in the heart of battle..."

So Close Yet So Far Away

4 comments click here

So first off I just want to say a word of thanks to all the people near and far that took the time to vote for me. We tried our best and you guys all surely showed your support and that's what kind makes me feel bad that I couldn't come through for y'all. However at the end of the day there must be winners and there must be losers. After all it was some stiff competition considering their were seventeen of us in the running for best lifestyle blog and I managed to come in 4th. Still a little depressed somewhat considering I had the most votes in my category I would have at least thought maybe I would have been second or at worst third if the Judges didn't like my blog much. I guess it wasn't good enough for what they consider to be a lifestyle blog; so I guess I can't be too upset since I primarily run a gaming blog and throw bits of lifestyle posts in for fun. I really think they need to rethink the grading scheme and maybe consider making it a 50/50 percent where online votes and judges votes are equally weighed instead of the 30/70 percent split that they did.

Now as you can clearly see from the picture above of the grading scheme they used I got screwed pretty hard because of that wide grading difference between online voting and personal judge scoring. Some how a blog that had the 5th lowest amount of votes won the award for best Lifestyle blog. Now i know this isn't politics and there is no guarantee that the most votes entitle you to winning but if they really are the best then why do they only have 20 votes in all? Shouldn't they have a large fan-base that supports them because they are a good and well known blog? If you think that's bad just wait cause there's more.

There is the grading scheme for my friend Shawn's category for best technology blog. Now I was almost certain this was a win for him because he had the most votes in his category and there were only five of them in that category. Surely with SEVEN HUNDRED AND SEVENTY SEVEN votes he can pull off a victory or at least an honorable finish right?

As you can see from the picture he placed fifth; out of five people, so that's last place with the most online votes. Yeah definitely think they need to rethink that grading scheme they gots going on there. I don't really want to drag this out so i'll just end that rant about the grading scheme with that. Moving right along...

Overall Event was pretty cool; considering I don't get out much. I enjoyed myself and wasn't thinking about my gaming too much so that was an interesting experience, you can check out some pictures I took on our Facebook page album. *(still carried my PSVITA as a backup plan just in case things went south)* Didnt  so much like the idea of having the event outdoors given the nature and unpredictability of the weather but the location was nice and classy. We were at the South Beach Cafe; home to Jamaica's only dedicated Daiquiri bar. I got a bit hungry and decided to try out the food there which I must say was pretty darn good but in Kingston that also translates to mean pretty damn expensive as well. Nevertheless our young gamer took it like a man and ordered some grub and swiped that company card like a boss to pay for his meal of Brompton Remoulade.

There were two booths present at the awards but I want to give a special mention to the Campus Clutter booth as they were very engaging and a service that needs to be highlighted. So essentially Campus Clutter is a hub for any and all university students that are in need of anything from books to housing to personal items. Campus Clutter is an online advertising platform that aims to improve and develop the campus environment and experience. They have a wide range of categories and features to suite your every campus need! If you’re interested in anything related to university life then simply click on the tab located on the dashboard and select your category of interest on their website http://www.campusclutter.com. they even have a Facebook page you can check out if you feel up to it. If you are in university or know someone who is you should definitely go check them out. Zalgo Cometh endorses this company...^_^

Well all in all I enjoyed the event and am glad to see an event of its caliber happening and growing year to year. They announced that for future Blog Awards they will be expanding it to include the entire Caribbean and not just Jamaica only. So that should be interesting to see maybe even host it in different islands every year and maybe fly out the top 3 finalists for each category to the respective island it is being held. Alas only time will tell what happens; for now i'm going back to what I do best, playing video games and...

Phase 1 Is Complete

4 comments click here

How y'all doing? Know its definitely been a while since we sat down and had a little talk. Blog has been on vacation for a bit as we normally do at the end of the year but no worries we will be kicking back off our usual schedule of posts in due time. Still keeping the norm of random topics on Mondays and Video Game reviews on Fridays so we got something for everyone. Want to say Happy New Year to all the fan/followers as well as the newcomers that might have stumbled unto my blog page by whatever means. You are appreciated just as I how i hope you appreciate this blog. With that being said another special thanks to those who voted for my blog to be nominated for the Jamaican Blog Awards. I am officially a finalist and even though its not over yet I already feel like a winner. It feels great being acknowledged for something I put over two years of my life into between the blog page, our Facebook fan page, our youtube channel, and our twitter feed.

Granted I usually complain that Jamaica isn't that tech savvy but this Blog awards is seemingly a step in the right direction. They have been doing this for about two years now but only since last year when a fellow school mate of mine (http://mszrockstar.i-roc.biz/) won an award with them did I hear about their organization of sorts. Jamaica Blog Awards is all about giving support and encouragement to the persons on the internet from the diaspora of Jamaica who called themselves Bloggers, those who spend their time to express themselves on the various blogs in various ways, whether it be a video blog, blog spot, micro blog and so forth. So now that it is that I have a blog and am nominated as a finalist I need the help of YOU lovely person sitting in front of your computer to help me be rewarded for all my hard work and dedication.

I Do It For Ya'll. All Day Everyday.....^_^
If you go to http://jamaicablogawards.org/jm/jamaica-blog-awards-finalists-2012/ you will see my blog "In The Mind Of My Mind" nominated for the best Lifestyle blog category. We're the third one from the bottom of the list; voting officially opens up on January 8th so as I write this now on January 7th i'm just giving you a heads up. I will edit this post after tomorrow and add the link for voting granted all goes well. Once voting has commenced I beseech you; yes I said beseech, deal with it; to vote for me and help me win this very competitive category because it would literally make my year if we somehow pull this off. The Voting Period is from January 7-14, 2013 so vote as often and as frequent as you can for that limited time and get your friends and family to vote as well. Plus I can't think of a better way to celebrate being alive after surviving yet another doomsday world ending event. So i'm gonna be a little whore for the voting period of this and i'm asking...., wait no scratch that; BEGGING any and everyone I see to take a moment of your time and vote for me and if you can vote more than once then even better..lol

Well with all that being said I take my leave; there is much muchness to be done after all. So in closing just want to shout-out some of my fellow nominees that put in work and got nominated as well. Good luck and may the force be with you all...

As Promised Here Is The Link To Vote For Me So Please Do Go Right Ahead And Do So; I Implore You To Also Send The Link To Your Friends Or Send Them Here So They Can Vote As Well

Behold The Epicness Of Anime Nation 2012

20 comments click here
*cue my epic intro music*

Welcome one and all to the gathering of freaking awesome people, also referred to as Anime Nation. Near and far alike many people assembled like the avengers to celebrate the merriment and wonder that is Anime and Japanese culture at its finest. We spoke a little about this event on Monday so I hope if you are a returning reader that you had the opportunity to come and see everything for yourself. If not then don't worry I got you back dude/dudette, not the greatest of video quality but I rep for my peoples so we got some video footage of the event to help you feel like you were a part of the action so to speak capturing some of the nights highlights. Not to mention the pictures that we snapped over the course of the night of varying cosplayers; I wonder if you can figure out who all these cosplayers are imitating? Well before I show you the main video I just want to say many a thanks to RETV who 'pass thru' through as promised via their shout-out on Twitter. Special thanks as well to the Japanese Embassy of Jamaica for helping spread their wonderfully rich culture with us. Last but not least the JACosplayers team along with all the anime fans that came out and showed supported to make this a grand success. So to quote a famous plumber; "Here We Go!"

So yeah, not the greatest of video quality of editing since i'm kinda working with limited resources and time at the moment but its at least an authentic and genuine experience into what the Anime Nation has to offer. Hopefully one day I will own my own professional camera and mic to shoot with but until such time or one of you kinda people donates to my worthy cause this will have to do ^_^. Anywhore got some other videos to show off as well along with the photo gallery of the event which will be on our facebook page so be sure to go and check those out along with all the other content we have their on Zalgo Cometh. Be sure to like the page and enjoy because it lets us know you care...
