It's been so long hasn't it. See what I did there with the title of the blog and the name of the game; pretty funny huh? No.....well I thought so =P. Today we take a look at the newest hot FPS (First Person Shooter; you should know this by now) game to hit the market Brink. In Brink, two factions, Resistance and Security, battle in a once-utopian city called The Ark, a floating city above the waters of a flooded Earth. In Brink we have something called the SMART (Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain) System. By noting a player's position and predicting what he is trying to do, the system lets players navigate complex environments without equally complex input. This enables one to scale walls, fences and other such objects as would a parkour athlete. (click here to find out what parkour is) There are four character classes in the game: the Soldier, the Medic, the Engineer, and the Operative.
How freaking awesome was that; I have been waiting on this game since I first heard about it in Spring 2010, then it got pushed back to Fall 2010 and then yet again till May 17 2011. Seemingly they finished ahead of schedule and changed the release date to a week earlier on May 10, 2011; I am left wondering if maybe the decision was premature seeing as they had to release a download patch for the game one day one of sales. This game had so much potential and while it in some aspects lives up to it, for me as a gamer it falls into the category of many games in this day and age of focusing too much on multi-player and neglecting the single player aspect too much. Let me not totally bash the game however, I give credit to the customizability/individuality of each class and character but even this is not emphasized enough as half the time if playing single player you end up having to compensate for the lackadaisical AI by switching classes to ensure the mission can be completed.I will end by saying this; Brink honestly feels like it could have used some more polishing but still I applaud their effort in trying to bring something new to the table of FPS games in this day and age. Hopefully many other game companies will follow suit to help move the industry along and help it to evolve and grow. If you are an avid online gamer then Brink is a feasible gaming option for you, otherwise I would say save your money for something that appeals to your gaming tastes on a wider scale than just multi-player.
